The History
Lenchwood is located on Spitten farm. It is not certain exactly how old Spitten Farm is. The present farm building probably dates from the eighteenth century, however stone flagged floors suggest an even earlier building on the site.
Spitten Farm had been in the possession of Fred Hadley since 1935. It was farmed for many years, sheep and cattle, though the nature of the soil on the plateau (known as ‘Cold Clay’) was difficult for arable farming. God chose to reveal the beginnings of His plans to Grace Hadley.
Grace had been a nurse in India before returning and spending the greater part of her life caring for her father. When he died, she remained in the family home, making visits from time to time to her brother.
It was during one of these visits, in about 1966, that Grace was walking in the fields when God spoke audibly to her. He wanted to use the farm to care for His ‘tired and weary children’, as ‘a place of refreshment’
